Pather Panchali -- Bengali/Hindi -- what is she saying???

Is there anyone out there who owns the film Pather Panchali and speaks either Bengali or Hindi?





There is a scene in the movie when Durga, the little girl, is planting a flower in the yard and making a prayer. The prayer goes like this (in English):





"Holy pond flower garden, who prays here at noon?"


"I am the pure maiden, Leelavati. The sister of my brother..."


"Mother Goddess, teach me. I know not how to pray"


"May I give my husband a son."


"May I die by the Ganges. Oh, Haro, of Parvati...may I always be pure."





Is there anyone who can tell me what she is saying IN BENGALI (I'm pretty sure it's Bengali). I'm not Indian myself and my knowledge of Hindi is pretty minimal, but she is speaking too fast for me to write down what she says. So far I have:





"Punyi pukhu pushhpa ke pujari dukhu vela."





("Holy pond flower garland, who prays here at noon?")





I think this is correct. Lemme know if it's wrong.

Pather Panchali is in Bengali. I saw that classic years back. Based on what I know in Hindi, the word garland in your translation is not there. I hope some one who knows Bengali can give you a precise translation.

'punyi' means 'holy'


Not 'pukhu', it's 'pukur' that means 'pond'


'pushpa' means 'flower'


'mala' means 'garland'


'ke' means 'who'


'pujari' means 'the man who worships'


And it's not 'dukhu vela', it's actually 'dupurbela' that means 'noon' Report It
