Cons should Read and Heed.
US and British occupation of Iraq is regarded as the re-emergence of the old colonialist practices of the western empires in some quarters. The real ambitions underlying the brutal onslaught are still highly questionable - and then there are the blatant lies over weapons of mass destruction originally used to justify the war. There were no great victory marches by the occupiers, nor were they thrown garlands of flowers and greeted in triumph. More US soldiers have died in Iraq since George Bush declared an end to the war on 1 May 2003 prompting the question: Will Iraq turn into a new Vietnam eventually bringing the US to its senses ... or perhaps to its knees?
Iraq's history, and along with it that of the Arab Muslim world, speaks of several similar encounters. In the past, enemies attacked from East and West before they were swallowed by the moving sands of the region, or forced to retreat, leaving behind people who are bitter. Vietnam again??
Are you a war supporter? If you are you should reed and heed this. OK?
it's beginning to look that way to me. it's too bad that a lot of people were not around during that era, and the many that were don't remember it.
Reply:LET THE BEATINGS CONTINUE UNTIL MORALE IMPROVES!!!
Reply:Hussein was not cooperating with the UN. Since he was in violation of humanitarian laws, and laws governing chemical weapons coalition forces attacked.
There was great rejoicing by the populace which included tearing down of posters and statues of the former leader.
The people of Iraq have been liberated. The problem is they have lived under such a harsh dictatorship for so long that they didn't know how to handle their new found freedom.
So the US and some other countries have stayed on as security forces because other countries (Iraq and syria specifically) have been trying to take over Iraq and cause civil disruption with insurgents. This disruption is supposed to cause the people to rebel against each other as well as the good US soldiers that are there to help.
Iraq has been slow to form internal alliances and a solid govenment but they are coming along nicely. It is almost time for us to leave. Once they come on board with the rest of the world then their counrry will profit and grow which will cause the people to realize the good that was done.
Reply:You should move to Iraq
Reply:Blah, blah, blah. Re-check your history moron!
Reply:Well i see things are not going to well for you and your Terrorists Propaganda Machine.
Dont worry even people like you will eventually get one or two on your wave length.
Me thinks your version of history needs to be re-examined there old pal.
So i take it your an Authority on the Military Higharchy to assume you know the real ambitions of the such.
The blatant lies of the WMD issue is only what people like you and others would love it to be disproved, but then you, and they cant say that, and know for sure there we none. Although people on here have stated that Iraq did indeed have WMD.
No there were no great victory Marches Because of the Few well paid and well looked after remnants of Saddams forces who put up a meagere defence.
Now if the Whole of Iraq Had not of wanted the coalition forces In Their Country the Battles Would have been more brutal, and would have lasted longer, With a hell of a lot more caualties on all Sides.
But of course you forgot to mention the Pulling down of Saddams Statue and the cheering crowds when it hit the ground.
Will Iraq turn into a new Vietnam eventually bringing the us to its sences...or perhaps to its knees.
I am personally thinking this is what you would love to see happen to the USA.
It amazes me to read what you as an American can write about the country that keeps you safe and Permits you to slander it.
Thats Why America is the land of the Free.
I can not see the Coalition forces Being forced to Retreat From Iraq.
Reply:What ever Dude. You can find way more bullshit than truth in this world. And you prove it every time you post.
There is no colonialism, only liberation from tyranny.
Reply:Another example of the Democrats. Once a proud strong and admirable political organization but now has forgotten its history and principles that once gave strength to its appeal. Now the party depends on a policy of defeatism and shame. Get a clue, you lost in 2004 because of weak national security, you'll lose again....
Reply:The only thing Iraq has in common with Vietnam is people like yourself lying to the American people in order to spread enemy propaganda. The only chance the enemy has is for people like yourself to stab the US soldier in the back.
Reply:Yes I think its like Vietnam again. I think we should bring our Troops home now and if 911 happens again instead of going over there just do a Hiroshima on them.
Reply:RESPECT TO YOUR COMMENT MATE,AMERICANS AND EUROPEANS THINK MUSLIMS HATE "AMERICANS",THE "BRITISH" OR "EUROPEANS".IF YOU KNOW ANY PEOPLE LIKE CHARITY WORKERS IN IRAQ OR AFGANISTAN YOU WILL KNOW THAT PEOPLE DONT WANT TO BE OCCUPIED,THEY HATE THE GOVENMENTS , NOT THE COUNTRY! GOT TOLD THIS BY A BRITISH T.A SOLDIER THAT AMERICAN TROOPS ARE RUNNING THE POPPY TRADE IN AFGANISTAN BUT AS USUAL THE MEDIA ISNT GOING TO GET ACCESS TO COVER IT.INSTEAD THEY'LL SHOW 5 IRAQIS JUMPIN UP AND DOWN WITH JOY UNDER THE HEADLINES "IRAQ,FINNALY RELIEVED TO BEEN FREED BY OUR TROOPS"....BULLS*HITE....
BUSH WAS ONCE ASKED ABOUT WHY HE WAS GOING TO WAR,THE STUPID GUY REPLIED THAT THEY WERE GOING INTO IRAQ TO FREE IRAQIS.....HA HA HA....STUPID C*UNT.WHO BELEIVES THAT?.........WELL EVERYONE WHO THINKS IRAQIS WANT TO DESTABILISE THEIR OWN COUNTRY WITH SUISIDE BOMBS.sUISIDE BOMBS ARE AN ADVANTAGE FOR THE OCCUPIERS.PLEASE TAX PAYERS RE-ARRANGE THIS ANNAGRAM OF A MESS THE MEDIA ARE PROTRAYING...IRAQ ISN'T THE NEW VEITNAM,ITS THE NEW PALESTINE!peace
Reply:Possibly, unless we remove Bush and his cowardly clan, and replace them with a real USA loving patriots that will annihilate our enemies, then yes we're facing another Vietnam.
Reply:Your "facts" are incorrect.
"Some quarters" are always thinking "old colonialist", but they are old hat. There are no plans to make Iraq the 51st state of the US or an affiliate country of the UK.
The only "blatant lies" on the WMD turns out to be from Saddam Hussein himself - he's the one that told the world that he had them. Every country's intelligence was of the opinion that he did - Russia and France included! Look it up!
The plans are for the first troop withdrawals to start as early as next year. Viet Nam lasted over 25 years. Exactly how can you compare the two?
We still have American soldiers being killed in Kosovo - why aren't you beefing about that one? And we're still in Korea as well as some African countries. Don't hear anything about them...
Iraq's recent history is one of aggression against their neighbors, whom are happy to be rid of Hussein although not happy with the thought of a neighboring democracy because their own people are restless with dictatorships.
I think you need to read more actual news and less garbage, and get a bigger perspective on what's really going on.
Reply:I say let the war supporters support it. If you are in the age range, in good health and beleive in this war GET YOU *** OFF THIS THING AND GO SIGN UP.
If you think this war is unjust, wrong, immoral, it did not happen because of anything you did. You tried to stop it, you should continue to oppose, undermine and resist it in any way you see fit.
This war did not start and will not end by anyone's witty arguments for or against it. All you can hope for is to explain it to people so they can see what it is, how it started, whose interest it is in, and then they can act accordingly.
Reply:I have to ask you a question. What would you do it the terrorists OR men like Saddam showed up at your door loaded with weapons ready to kill you because you didn't believe as they do? Would you welcome them in or would you call the police?
AS for the re emergence of old practices. What do you think the zealots in the Muslim world want to do to the rest of the world. Same thing!
While the reasons may be questionable in your mind I believe that most people see that there is a greater good. Yes maybe it is about oil or money. What war hasn't been about controlling something and trying to gain more. History is full of this. Why should now be different. Never has there been a 100% "Just Because We Want to Help" type war. Get your head out of the sand. There is always something to be gained by one group or another.
The majority of the world just want to be left to their own means. Christians, Muslims, Jews and all the rest. Problem is that we as a world population allow mad men to run things. If we stood up we could stop this but we don't. Why? Because there is something to be gained by us if we align with these mad men. Be it wealth, power or both.
Reply:Maybe... but the USA is betting very long term according to me.
It's all about perception and a simple revisiting of economics 101.
Iraq has OIL
Iraq is the most vulnerable country in the middle east.
IRAQ also has access to PORTS
OIL is the MOST precious commodity in the world in a 25 year horizon
OIL = POWER
America is on the wane as a super power
It needs a leverage point to maintain power equations for some time
Although it has its own reserves of oil. Interally it will not start consumption till oils is beyond $150-$200 per barrel
In the interim it will buy oil
However Mr. bush has ensured a HUGE fiscal deficit
so now economists and policy makers want cheap oil
where do you get cheap oil from?
a country you can destabilize
IRAQ
A coonected issue is ther about Afghanistan
Afghanistan provides the western edge to iran.
Eastern edge to Iran is IRAQ
There is threat of invasion in IRAN
Think of it like chess
Biggest coming threat to US is from China
Let's start from there
India is now an open ally
Pakistan was always with the US
Afghanistan is run by the US
Next comes IRAN
Currently under threat from the US
Next is IRAQ
Currently under US control
The completion of this corridor gives unlimited access to US all the way to China
US has a better navy/ air force so China gets blocked in the pacific.
The strong Chinese army gets blocked by this corridor
Plus US gets oil
Mr. Bush never told us this
As you said... we only have to use our brains
Reply:Why do so many people on this site feel the need to babble on incessantly about crap that they don't understand. I have yet to see anyone on here talk about the Iraq war and provide an original thought. It is either crap the media has said, some crap you heard from your teacher, your mom, some celebrity, an "analyst," etc. or just what you think people want to hear you say.
You say US and British occupation of Iraq is regarded as the re-emergence of the old colonialist practices of the western empires in some quarters. So? Every action by anyone is regarded as something in some quarters. If I tell someone, "hey, looking good today!" it could be taken as a compliment or as sexual harrassment. Whether or not it is regarded as old colonialist practices by some people is irrelevant. That is exactly the same as saying that terrorism is a *good thing* because some people believe it to be. Watch your logic before you construct an argument.
Next point of contention: Vietnam comparisons.
Over 70,000 US soldiers died in Vietnam. This was over the course of about a decade, and we have been in Iraq for 1/3 of that time. Last count I saw, US deaths in Iraq were somewhere around 2,300. The differences are obvious. Further, why not compare the deaths in WWII, 407,000? Hmmm... maybe because analyzing actual empirical data would strain your small brain a little too much. 2,300 deaths is much, much less than that. I challenge people with your type of thinking to explain why it was a good idea to enter WWII and not Iraq. If you can do that, next explain why 2,300 deaths is so much worse than 407,000 deaths. If you make it that far, explain why 2,300 deaths is worse than 70,000 deaths.
Bring the US to its knees? The United States has 1.4 MILLION active troops. Follow that up with a reserve force of another 1.4 million. So, 2300/2800000 = .0008 or 0.08%
You claim to be a well-read student of history. How many military forces were brought to their knees by losing .08% of its numbers?
Finally, the word is spelled, "read."
Reply:Not even close or comparabe to Vietnam. 2 different wars, 2 different times. Both Political? Yes, but all wars are political in some way.
Yes, looking at the history of Iraq, they did run British rulers out. How many years ago was that? Look at technology and motivation for being there.
